Brute Wars

Brute WarsBrute Wars is a pretty good RPG game just released on kongregate. Pick your team of brutes (animals) making sure to balance your magical prowess as well as your brute force. Then get out there and conquer the castles in an attempt to reach mount Asio.

Really, the story line isn't all that exciting, nor is it all that pertinent to the game play.
Just put together the best team you can. You'll have to take into account several different factors to advance.

First, there's a front and a back line. Keep your power hitters up front, and your distance hitters in back. But if someone's taking a beating, it's helpful to have another power hitter to switch in for him.

You only get so many actions a turn, so replacing someone in the front line may use up all your actions for a turn. Later on in the game, you'll have more actions per turn to play with, making it easier to switch men in and out.

The gameplay is not intuitive, so read through the directions.

Magical spells are stronger if you have more of the same type of character (water, fire, brute, etc...) But it also makes it more likely you could go up against someone who's in a great position to hit you in your weak point. I liked to balance things out more.

You can replace some of your characters by getting to a shop and buying a randomizer. That's the only way to get shadow creatures. This option will not be available right away.

You can travel back over spots you've already fought for to engage in random battles and build up points to buy food, syringes (to wake up those dozing creatures -- they've been knocked out) and randomizers. You also need the points to buy the upgrades (treasure chests on the map).

Protector Tower Defense

Protector Tower DefenseProtector tries to be a RPG and Tower Defense Game rolled into one. While it doesn't really succed at being an RPG, it has enough elements to make it a very good TD.

Place your units throughout the board to stop the oncoming hordes. Let too many get by you and it's lights out. Place your units wisely and you can win any board. Place them poorly and you're sure to lose.

There are five basic units red (splash damage), blue (slow), green (poison), purple (electrocute: debuff), and dexer (high damage land based attach). There are four more advanced units: alchemist (splash damage, land only), archer (high damage against flyers, but not land), necromancer (high damage, but based on number of kills) and paladin (high damage land attack).

Your units earn XP based on how many times they attack and do damage to an enemy. You can't level a unit up unless he has enough experience, adding a new twist onto the level up/money equation. Because of that, it may be a good idea to build up the back of your maze first, then start building up the front. Otherwise the units in front will get all the xp and the ones in back will be very inexperienced in the later rounds.

There are two basic types of enemies: flyers and land based. Keep in mind that dexers and paladins cannot hit flyers.

Basic strategy involves a lot of red mages, with a green mage and/or a blue mage near the entrance. Keep in mind that effects are not cumlutative, so it's not worth stacking a bunch of blue mages. Also, don't put a lower level green in front of a higher level one, because if an enemy unit is still being affected by the lower level mage, it won't take on the higher level mage's effects.

When leveling your units up, you can choose to level up their special attack (recommended at least first two or three levels, otherwise you don't have the special attack) or the general expertise (much stronger basic attack).

Once you beat a map, you can get skills such as lower cost of units, more damage, faster learning (more xp), etc... You can always reset the skills you have chosen, which means you can try building up a superarmy of red mages, then try a more moderate 'spread the skills around' strategy without any penalty. Your skills also unlock the more advanced units.

All in all, this is a pretty good TD game. It can be slow at times, but with many maps (I haven't worked my way through all of them, yet), you should be able to find a map you find challenging. It is probably worth working your way through the easier maps (medium level) first, allowing you to build up your skills for the harder maps.

Play Protector at Kongregate.

Update: It seems a lot of people are landing here looking for a FAQ, walkthrough, or some details on the more advanced units. If you have a question, leave a comment. I'll try my best to answer it.

Strategy Defense

Strategy DefenseWhile Strategy Defense looks like a tactics game, it really isn't. There's very little strategy involved in one 'hero' taking on anywhere from 4 to 8 (until the last battle) enemies whose only strategy is to charge forward, shoot at you and then run away.

But it's still a fun game. I found that by treating it as a puzzle game I could enjoy the challenge that came with each level. While getting stuck on certain levels was extremely frustrating when I couldn't solve it, I did get by eventually.

Ever hear of moving in a diagonal? Apparently the maker of this game hasn't.

Tips:

  1. Kill everything to build up your experience. While you get more money for finishing levels in fewer rounds, the xp counts for more. Instead, make sure you are at full health (or close to it) in order to build up your money supply. Building up money supplies is important. Don't waste any chance to end with a higher hp.
  2. Don't worry about buying things at the store. If you don't use it, you can sell it back later at the same price.
  3. Sometimes its best just to get shot and use your retaliation to fire back. Take a health potion on your turn instead of firing back and getting shot in retaliation. The best time to shoot one of your attackers is only if they will die with that shot. Otherwise, they get to hit you twice (once on your round in retaliation, and once on their round when they shoot back).
  4. If you can, stay out of range of your attackers and hit them with the magic arrow. Especially on the earlier levels and against the towers, this can save you a lot of time.
  5. Magic (except for the arrows) becomes useless within four rounds of when you can start using it.
  6. If you can't avoid your attackers the best strategy is to minimize the number of attackers who can hit you in a single round. Then heal yourself on your turn. Allow your retaliation to take care of them.
  7. Enemy knights are easy to avoid, so kill everything else while avoiding them.
  8. Keep in mind that you can run a lot farther as a knight, and you can switch right back to whatever else you want when you get there.

Update: Oops! As the anonymous commenter pointed out below, I never told you where it was.

Tower Tactics

Tower TacticsTower tactics is a rpg from armorgames and it is a great effort. Lead your men into battle, using your skills to tip the balance in your favor. In between battles, learn new skills and equip them. Hire new soldiers to replace those you lose. The more battles you win, the higher your reputation gets and the more soldiers you can hire.

All in all, it's a fun game. Visually intense, with great music. But there are some flaws. Using your skills in battle is hard. First you have to pick out your soldier from out of the crowd, then get him to use his skill. Then you have to move on to the next soldier, get him to move or fight or use a skill, then the next one and so forth.

You can mass move your men or attack a single enemy soldier en masse, but that doesn't help you use your skills. You can mass select the group, then pick out the guy you are interested in, then select the skill you want to use. It just isn't easy. Since you spend so much time learning new skills in between battles, you're going to want to employ those skills.

Also, the game is a little too linear for my taste. I like the ability to go back and re-fight battles or enter random fights in order to build up stats. You can't do that here. There are sub quests where you go back and fight in the same place. And if you lose a fight, you can go back and fight again while still gaining in skills and experience. Although if you lose your men too many times they won't be able to regenerate, forcing you to hire a new soldier. Once you finish the campaign, you can go and 'practice' to gain in xp, but that's a bit late for helping you during the campaign.

One last gripe. There's not a lot of variety between the skills you learn based on the type of soldier. You would think, for instance, the bowmen would have skills based on throwing projectiles, while the knights on horseback might have up close and personal skills. The mage should have its owns skills to master. Instead, everyone has almost the same skill list, just with different proficiencies.

But really, this is a fun game to play once you get into it. Automatically saving your progress works great (it's going to take you a while to beat the campaign). The graphics, as I mentioned before are great. The dialog is horrible (makes your hero look like an idiot). But still a great game for flash.

Swords and Sandals 2

Swords and Sandals 2Swords and Sandals is back in (demo version) a new and improved format. More weapons, skills and upgrades make this a much improved game.

Unlike the first version, you're more likely to survive to fight again. Duels are fought to first blood (Hint: buy a ranged weapon!), but tournaments are to the death. So make sure you upgrade your character the best way you know how before you attempt the tournaments.

Also, it may be cheaper to sleep on the street, but you're also much more likely to be robbed, plus your energy levels start out low.

Hints: I upgraded my agility more in order to use a ranged weapon. When fighting to first blood, you're going to need it. Also, entertain the crowd near the end of the fight, not at the beginning. The crowd tends to get bored quickly.

All in all, I enjoyed this second version a lot more than the first. You're much more likely to survive to fight another day, although if you run out of money, you may just wish you had died instead.

The Halloween Hunt

Halloween Hunt has brought you back from the dead 10 years after you were murdered by your father. Have you come back for revenge? Forgiveness? To win the competition for best costume by wearing a pumpkin for a head?

A nice adventure RPG game. Whenever you get stuck, level up by going back and beating up some lower level monsters. Buy new skills, talents and magic spells. One really nice feature: you can turn up the random battle generator when you want to level up, and turn it way down when you just want to get to point B without a lot of fuss.

Some nice 'haunted' music along with final fantasy type battles make this a worthwhile game to waste some halloween time with.

Morbus

Orbus is an RPG game from gamegarage (I have the link from freeonlinegames). Choose your character and play through the adventure. A side-scrolling adenture that will keep you entertained for a little while at least.

It's an interesting set of characters. Choose from a fighter, alchemist, traitor and jester. Each has his own attacks, strengths and weaknesses. But each is amusing in their own way.

Use a and s to hit your enemies (left and right arm). d is your action key (talk, pick up, go up ladders). Use the arrow keys to move around, and the down arrow to use your special attack (I kept trying to duck and ended up wasting all my manna). f opens up your inventory, while g lets you look at your stats.

Romanius

Romanius starts off with a lone hoplite survivor who's looking for revenge against the three cyclops who have organized an army and destroyed the hoplites home village. Take control of this hoplite and them down.

Directions are simple. Use the a to attack, s to jump and d to defend. Use the arrow keys to move left or right. Hit the space bar to use the blue jars (kill all on the screen, unless they are really big, in which case it still does damage).

Tips and walkthrough: Hold down the d key until you are ready to strike. Time the incoming arrows and strike only when you won't be hit in return. Same thing applies to the 'goliaths' <- my name for the larger soldiers. Let them hit you (you are holding the d key) and immediately hit them back. As long as you are holding the d key down, you will return to a defensive pose before he hits you again, which means you won't take any damage.

If you are stuck on the cyclops, here's how I killed him: Jump up to the two swinging boards. Stand on the one to the left. After the cyclops throws his stone, immediately jump up to the swinging board to the right. Then jump off that board to the right, hit the a key to hit the cyclops, then move back to the left to land back on the swinging board. Move back to the board on the left. Repeat this until he's dead.

I didn't hit him everytime I jumped out at him. Also, don't get greedy and try to hit the cyclops twice in a row. If he swings that rock at you for a hit, you'll be in a world of hurt. If you fall down, jump back up to the swinging boards as fast as you can. You probably won't be fast enough to avoid getting hit at least once.

Rampaging Hobbit

Rampaging Hobbit lets you rampage as a hobbit, of course. Take your hobbit through the many levels of fearsome beasts and harmless rabbits (don't kill the rabbits, you sick so and so).

Controls are simple, use a to go left, d to go right, and w to jump up. Or you can use the arrow keys to move around. Hold down the left mouse button to use your weapon (dagger, bow and arrow, etc...).

Don't bother trying to kill the spiders on the first level. Just get past them. Killing them gets a lot easier once you have a bow.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Iron and Flame

Fullmetal Alchemsit: Iron and Flame from Adult Swim lets you take control of Ed and Al from Fullmetal Alchemist, a cartoon on Adult Swim. Fans of the show will enjoy playing their favorite characters and the cut scenes, while others (like me) who have never heard of the show before can just enjoy the game.

Take Ed and Al through 7 levels and fighting multiple enemies (street fighter type). Use your special powers (transmutations), otherwise you will be overwhelmed very quickly. One hint: go back to the earlier levels if you die. You can build up experience and thus level up (but only to level 20). You can also build up your energy levels in order to cast the special attacks.

Whenever you level up, you gain access to more special attacks, so check them out (hit the m key), select your favorites and get back to the fight. It's also a good way to pause the game.

Use the big guy for when you want to just slug it out, but the little guy has the better special attacks. Switch back and forth (x) between them to get the most out of both.

Also, take some time to experiment with the different alchemy for each attack. You can up the amount of damage you can do with each attack. For Ed's stalactite (throws spikes or something) attack, I found the best combination was fire, earth, sulfur and zinc, but not copper.

I saw this game reviewed at jayisgames and had to try it out. I'm glad I did.

Kingdom of Fire

Kingdom of Fire is a short online RPG. You are on a quest for the local lord, Sir Tober. Your job is to solve the mystery of the crypt of kings. It seems someone is animating the dead in the local crypt. So head on in and solve the problem.

Although this is a linear story line, it was fun to do. Mostly you'll beat up on giant spiders and the animated dead with little risk to yourself. All the materials you need to find are there and the game plays pretty well. There's a long tutorial, but if you have played RPG before and are willing to click on everything, you should be able to figure it out. There are no hidden items or hidden doors (at least, I didn't find any?), so there's no real need to explore too much. You will need to go into every room and collect the treasures in order to finish the game, though.

Murloc

Murloc is a flash RPG that's just about as good as it gets for free online games. You play the role of Murloc from the World of Warcraft. While the beginning is a basic build up your character by beating up small fry, the opponents quickly get bigger and badder, so spend some time building up Murloc.

You have two talents to build up, fury and magic. Take your pick, but make sure to look at what you can advance to. Do you want the magical ability to renew (heal) yourself? Or is that big attack what you want to aim for. Or maybe you just prefer to act like a magician, rather than a fighter.

Some cute jokes (find the one ring down by the water) but for the most part, this is a linear game. But really quite good for an online flash RPG.

McDonalds Sim

The McDonald RPG (simulator/spoof) puts you in charge of running McDonalds. From the boardroom, to the cattle yard. Your job, of course, is to maximize profits, but don't let those evironmental wackos slow you down.

There are four screens to deal with. The agricultural sector, feed lot, the fast food restaurant, and the board room. Each has it's share of problems to deal with. You have to grow the soy and cows in the agricultural sector by buying the land and placing the cows or soy on it. Once the cows get large enough, they will be sent to the feed lot. Don't let any diseased or mad cow cows get slaughtered in this stage. They'll infect your customers, hurting the bottom line.

Once the cows are slaughtered, you need to serve your customers. Keep your employees in line with rewards, discipline, or just fire them outright. In the board room, use those creative marketers to increase your customers. Keep the PR group hopping, combatting those evironmentalists and nuts who think you're poisoning them. But most important of all is to keep the board members happy. After all, they're the ones who can fire you.

There's a very steep learning curve, so keep your cool. It may take a few tries to keep your job for longer than a few months. You'll get fired if you put the company in the red ($-30,000). As far as I can tell, that's the only way to end the game?

Exile the Game

Escape from prison and exile in this new adventure from miniclip. It's a top down adventure story where you can play as a swordsman or a bowman (harder, IMHO). Swing or shoot away at any of the enemies that come near (left mouse button). Explore, collect keys to locked doorways, and eat food to reenergize.

For any RPG enthusiasts, this will be a fun escape.

Tips: Don't eat the food unless you have to. Use the keys sparingly (as you can collect as many as you want). It will make life easier for you. When using the sword, swing away, you have a wider reach than you might realize at first. When using the bow, make sure you run, run, run away while firing at your opponents. They are slow to swing at you, so you should be able to run past them before they can swing at you. Be careful where you run, though. If you get too close to the door, you will automatically pass through. And that's quite a pain, since you could end up fighting enemies on both sides of the doorway.

Top Dog

Top Dog pits you against the computer in a biplane fight to the finish. Get airborne, capture the high ground and fire and take out your opponent before he takes you.

In Top Dog, you are flying in a biplane, so don't expect too much speed or control. You will have to lead your shots. Throttle up (up arrow), turn (left and right arrows) and fire away (space bar). You can do flips and even fly upside down, but remember that your opponent isn't playing games, he's trying to take you down. Also, you can crash into the ground, so be careful. Shots don't go through the sides of the screen so feel free to run away from your opponents fire by flying to the other side. You have but one life, so use it wisely.

Battle for Gondor

It's up to you save Gondor and middle earth from the invading orc army. Do you have what it takes to battle through 20 levels of mayhem?

This strategy game is a little bit addicting, but a lot of fun. Your hero's job is to clear out the top half, while your troops (hobbits, knights, elven archers, dwarven warriors, wizards, etc...) clear out the bottom half. In order to hire more troops, your hero has to kill the orcs streaming in on the top half.

Don't let any of them get past you! I've noticed a tendency to let them pass me by when they are near the bottom of your hero's section. They tend to blend in with the battle below.

Dark Ages

A tribute to gauntlet, but without the green elf. You are a knight on a 'quest' (which as far as I can tell is to collect as much treasure as possible). Head on through the dungeons, firing away (z is fire, hold z down for rapid fire) as the bone piles infinite numbers of bats, skeletons, zombies, etc... Infinite you say? Well, it's only fair since you have an infinite number of swords to throw back at them.

Keep in mind you're right handed as this makes a difference as to where the sword comes from. Destroy the bone piles then go back to pick up the booty once all the monsters are gone. Be careful where you use your keys, else you won't be able to pick up all the treasure.
