VR Defender Y3K: Walkthrough

VR Defender Y3K is another tower defense game, this time from armorgames. Place your towers to defend your server from the invading viruses (I might be getting the story line incorrect, but the back story just isn't important).

As with other tower defense games, you have several different types of towers to choose from. Take your pick (if you can afford it), place them strategically, and blow the creeps (viruses) up before they hit the tower (server). There are several different levels; easy, hard, very hard and impossible. The difference is in the map. Both easy and hard have 51 waves to beat. I haven't tried the other two.

Walkthrough: To beat hard, this is what I did: Place two machine guns near the beginning. If you blow up the inset picture, you'll see the first one on the middle left, the second one under the first n in congratulations. Then, I upgraded them both three times (alternating, so there is never more than one level difference between them).

Then I could afford to build a flame thrower on the corner (see picture, under the ti and just below the on in congratulations). By building them on the corner, they could hit the creeps as they were coming and as they were going. Again, I alternated upgrading them to level 3.

At that point, I built a couple of lightning towers. Again, I alternated upgrading them to level 3. Lightning towers have the added ability to freeze creeps for up to 2 seconds. As the creeps get harder, you're going to need more time to kill them off.

Then I started building light towers. I would only upgrade them once, then I would build another one. They have a large enough reach that upgrading them more than that would be a waste of time. These are the towers that do the most damage in my solution.

To finish the game, I would build both lightning (scatter them around) and light towers (in the center). I would upgrade the lightning towers to level 3 and the light towers to level 2. The lightning towers would freeze them, while the light towers would do the most damage. My reasoning for only going to level 2 for the light towers was thus: I could either wait to build up enough money to upgrade to level 3, or I could go ahead and build another tower. I'd rather have another tower sooner, given their long range.

I've seen other solutions involving freezing towers and void tower. I can never get the creeps to bunch up well with the frost towers but, if you're inclined to do it that way, feel free.

Play VR Defender Y3K at armorgames.

  1. I've beaten easy, hard, and very hard using nothing but machine guns, flamethrowers, and ice towers.

I can't get past level 9 on impossible. I don't think it is possible.

    1. What was the strategy used to get that far? Were you taking damage up until then?

I beat the lower levels the same way Fire and Ice

but with impossible the machine guns are not effective enough to give you the cash to build up to better weapons, if anyone knows of some miracle machine gun layout that works please post it

  3. Nice job, Matt. Perhaps I made it too complicated. But, I just don't like the flamethrowers. Once you have more than a few on the board, it's almost impossible to see what's happening. And that's a problem because I can't really tell how well the maze is doing.

I have a hard time believing the machine guns are all that effective after a while. They just don't do enough damage.

  4. Beating easy right now with basically the flamethrower/lightening/light setup. Works well enough

the easiest way to beat easy, hard and very hard is to build up an army of freeze guys, a few flamethrowers on the straight aways and then all voids for aoe, if you have enough freeze guys they will all bunch up and will barely move through the map, then the aoe will own them. as for impossible, it is just that i believe, i got to level 10 then died real hard

Ok ok so the inset is for the "hard difficulty" but what about on easy I cant get past level 42 and I'm looking for a decent set up

  12. For easy: Build (and upgrade) a couple of machine guns to get you to the flamethrowers. Put them at corners so that they flame down the corridor. Upgrade them.

Build freeze towers (one or two won't do it. Build lots of them) near the beginning and upgrade them to level 4. Make sure the flame towers can cover the area where the creeps get frozen.

Then, when you have enough money, build void towers. That will get you through the finish.

  13. I struggled with this one for a while. For easy, just use 2 machine guns (level 3 each), 2 flame throwers (level 3 each) 3 ice throwers (level 3 each). Then get a void, then start building more ice throwers and voids, upgrading each as much as you can. The last alien (boss i guess) takes away like 50 health if he hits the core so make sure you're above that cause he'll probably get through whatever you set up. At least he did for me.

    ReplyDelete
  14. i built up enough freeze guys so that they would completely stop all movement. no one was getting past a certain point. then i built 2 of those black guns and upgraded them to the max and nothing got through. finished with 100 health on easy and hard that way.

I beat easy and hard using similar tactics to above. It was challenging, but fun.

My question is, how do you win very hard? No matter what I do, I can't muster enough firepower to do sufficient kill damage to waves 10-12 to prevent them from draining my life down to 0. So far the tactics I have tried:

    - All Machine Guns
    - Mix of flame throwers and machine guns
    - Mix of flame throwers, machine guns, and ice towers
    - Just flame throwers
    - Just flame throwers and ice towers
    - 1 lightening tower

I can't afford flame towers until level 5 or so, by which time I add as many as I can, but can only have 3 or 4 ready, tops, by wave 10. No matter where I place them - or if I substitute 1+ of them for ice towers - I can't do enough damage to kill more than 4 or 5 of each wave.

Any ideas? This was not a problem on easy or hard.

    THANKS!

Ice cannons and light towers are the way to go. I also throw in some flamethrowers on the straight aways. I haven't tried the void towers, but light has worked for me.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Anonymous3:59 PM

I have beaten easy and very hard using only 7 towers in total. I assume my strategy would also work on hard, but I haven't tested it.

First, I build two machine guns and take turns upgrading them until they are both at level 3.

Second, I build two flamethrowers at either end of a straightaway (usually the central one on easy and very hard). I take turns upgrading these fully. These can then take care of all the creeps until I can finish the rest of my setup.

Third, I build three ice cannons. The first goes on the corner of a turn. The second goes next to the first, following the way that the creeps move. The third goes next to the second in the same manner. I then upgrade all 3 fully. Once you have three ice towers like this (from my experimentation, it worked best at the exit of a turn as I have it), all the creeps stop moving. It's cheap but effective.

At this point, you can sell all your towers apart from the ice cannons if you want and it'll still work.

In total, you end up $11640 short of the potential maximum amount of cash (assuming every creep killed and no towers built) from the cost of 3 fully upgraded tier 2 towers, 30% of 2 fully upgraded tier 2 towers (since you can sell the flamethrowers), and 30% of 2 partially upgraded tier 1 towers.

    Impossible guide:
Early game is two mgs, then upgrade to level 2 on both, then save for flamer, then flamer, then upgrades on both flamers once you hit level 10. put the flamers at 1/3 and 2/3 of the way through the level on opposite sides, that way their damage stacks.

hold down space to see the health of the viruses. it helps.

once u have that setup, get ice cannons and don't stop until you have two level 3's on each side of the path.

For IC's, u shouldn't upgrade past level 3, b/c the extra time of freezing that level 4 gives u (.08 seconds) costs 800, which you could spend on a new level 3 ice tower (200+200+400) that freezes for .17 seconds.

After that, get plasmas and put them right next to the pathway on both sides--upgrade to level 3 on each plasma, (which maxes out AOE) then get up to 5 IC's on either side. you should be at wave 20 by this point. the next five waves, save for void while putting down 1 new level 3 ice per wave.

Ice + void is the only way to win the game b/c once u can bunch 10-12 viruses together the AOE will let a level 2 void do ~1000-7000 damage per shot to the collected viruses (which averages out to around what a level 4 light tower will do), while the viruses cannot move b/c of the ice cannons. get 20 ice cannons and put them in range of the viruses, you'll see that on impossible setting you can just fit that many in two 2x5 blocks on either side of the pathway. Then, just put void towers such that they're within range of the likely clump point (usually a little past the midpoint of your ice cannon gauntlet) and you should be fine for levels 25-40. sell all but two voids and max those two; the low AP of the void means that 60 damage is deducted from every virus in wave 40-50 per shot, and if u only have two voids shooting, you can minimize damage wasted to armor.

got to level 44 on impossible with this setup.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anonymous8:54 PM

the 2x5 blocks of the ice cannons should fit together such that their firing circles just intersect at one point. place both blocks one row removed from the central path

I can't get past level 9 on impossible, where should I set up the machine guns at the beginning? Or any other tips on beating the level.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Anonymous5:04 PM

I still don't get how some of you have gotten that far on impossible. There's just no way at the beginning to kill all of the viruses with the resources you have. And by the time you can afford the other things, you still cant build the requirements to beat the level (if its possible) because you're in debt as far as money goes because viruses have gotten through...

I've actually placed machine guns in every location possible on impossible, whether starting with 2 level 1s or 1 level 2, growing in different orders, etc. To tell the truth, it's actually kind of luck-based. Certain setups will kill more some times and less other times.

I don't think that impossible is possible without some sort of cheat or hack. If it is, someone please enlighten me as to the magic beginning setup.

1st, build 2 machine guns, get them both to lvl 2, den get 1 to lvl 3, then buy a ice canon, upgrade it once, buy 2 flamethrowers, another freeze canon, up grade both flamthrowers now, only once, then start building lightning and light towers, and the occasional freeze tower

Perhaps I'm missing something - how do you defeat the level 10 wave (the wave of large black/white circles with 500 health a piece) with 2 MGs (even one at level 2 and one at level 3) and just an ice tower?

Again here - honestly, I just don't believe you....you say build two MGs and level them up, at least one of them to level 5. Ummmm...dude: Lvl 5 costs 800 (50+50+100+200+400)...there's physically no way to reach this before level 10 (the super hard one, as mentioned above). To be honest, I'm not convinced that even if you reached 2 lvl 5 MGs and an ice tower by level 10 that you could do it...

Please feel free to post screenshots and/or give a more detailed account to prove me wrong....

It really seems to be impossible to get beyond level 10 on 'impossible'. I've tried several times and experienced that the money you get is never enough to build or upgrade enough cannons. If there is anyone who really made it he has to post some screenshots....or noone will believe it! ;)

    From: Fritz

I've only gotten to level 10, but I may be on to something. Let me know if you can use this to get farther.

Let's call the row below the enemy path 'A' and the row above the enemy path 'B'. Then, let's call the columns 1-23 started from the beginning to the end (enemy enters their saftey point at column 22). I placed my first machine gun at A5 (so that if I upgrade to L2, I do not have any wasted range). My second machine gun at B7. Level two is critical. You need to get $44 at the end of the level (it will not always happen) because the timing that you get enough for a third machine gun can be very benificial. When I have $44 at the end of level 2, I get it just in time to kill quite a few more enemies and get about $10 more.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anonymous12:44 PM

    From: Fritz

I then place my third gun way down at A17. I then worked my way back to the beginning, placing guns at B15, then A13, B11, and A9. Then I saved for a flame thrower. By level 8 I had enough and placed it in the center. I still couldn't pass level 10. But, selling some guns may have helped to get a second FT, or an upgrade. Let me know.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Anonymous2:41 AM

I followed Fritz's format of placing MGs at the places he specifies. I tried 10 different ways, upgrading after getting 7 MGs a few times and even selling off a few mgs to get a flame. All resulted in dying during wave 10.

Holding the spacebar definitely helps, but no solution.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Anonymous3:29 PM

I beat easy using 51 flamethrowers, six ice cannons, and 2 lighting towers (all futty upgraded). Once you get about 10 flamethrowers all you do is keep adding them and upgrading them and you will win easily. Just make sure to add ice and lighting towers to stun the creeps. Using this method does slow the game down alot though.

I did it with the ice cannon strategy. In total I had 4 fully upgraded flamers, 1 fully upgraded light tower, and.... 43 fully upgraded ice cannons. +100 health, boss was stopped immediately, took 8 minutes to beat the game.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Anonymous4:55 PM

Even with everyones help on here as well as weeding out the bullshit I can still only get to level 11 on impossible and even getting to level 11 I have to get lucky. Flamers are pretty much useless on impossible unless you could get them to stay firing in one direction. I agree Impossible IS impossible.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Anonymous1:27 AM

ok this game is just starting to piss me off, and i fail to see how any of u keep saying "the flame/ice/void strategy is the only one that works, blah blah blah" since the strong enemies start coming out to soon to even give u a chance to build up ur money. i cant even get past easy becuz for the life of me i cant build up enough money for a void before i die. wtf? this game is incredibly broken and i give it a 1/10, if anything, simply for the fact that the few waves that u ARE able to beat, its rather fun doing it.

Here's a system for beating "Easy" and not losing ANY life points. Start with 2-3 machine guns, then quickly add a couple of flamethrowers. Upgrade the machine guns and flamethrowers. Then, add ice towers and more machine guns in the 1st "square". Later, add light towers, lighting towers and more flamethrowers, machine guns and max the ice towers. You'll free everything that comes your way, flame them with the throwers and pick them off with MG's and LT's.

Start with two MGs in the front, get them to level 4, and start getting flamethrowers. Ice cannons come in at about 25 on hard and 30 on easy.

Then lightning towers and light towers.

As for Very Hard, I can't make it very far without getting hit. Anybody have any tips?

Had 18 life left, After ending up with two level 2 flamers (About lvl 14) It was actually a bit easier,Then with a crap load of level 2-3 ice and a few voids I won with 4 life at the end.

It's much more fun to beat these levels without stunning towers such as Ice or Lightning.

And yes, I've beaten Impossible. It's not too hard, you just need to use everything efficiently; for example, it's more efficient to upgrade Machine Gun turrets to level 2, build four of them, and then sell and go Flamethrowers.

died at lvl 15 at impossible..(just got lucky as in first 8 rounds, managed to make machingun lvl 4... then flame ...)

very hard-> two machinguns at topleft and bottem right box area try best so they can hit all 3 sides. make front one lvl4 if you are holding well, back one lvl4 if you cant hold it. after its lvl1 MG and lvl4 MG is fighting, get flame thrower ASAP. make two at middle line, and per upgrade, build 1 freeze tower. (so at end, 8 lvl1 freeze and 2 full up flame) then upgrade freeze to lvl3.(i see it best freezing time per cost at this lvl.)

then sell machinguns as freeze tower will do job of killing low helths...

then make tons of freeze tower at middle line bourder. leave last lines (tat bourders with box area you put machingun) and fill other lines with freeze. then make void tower and upgrade void and make void. freeze tower always at lvl3.(number of freeze will be enough to make them take 1 hour to reach server XD) then you are through.

warning- my stratagy takes bout 3 hour to clear game. ones i heard was lightning, and thunder tower combo, but wont work for me. even on easy.but i saw vid of tat tactic, took 1 hour for tat dude.

Here's how to do easy and hard...
First, build 2 machine guns and upgrade both to lvl 3.
Then, get some flamethrowers and upgrade them. A few stages later, you can get some ice cannons for freezing. Keep buying more of these. Buy some plasma cannons too and upgrade them. When you get to $3200, buy void towers (Light tower optional but recommended for last level). When you get to the finale you should have 2 maxed lightning towers to stun the white octagon.

for those of you who are completely frustrated with the last boss, its really easy. When he is the last remaining runner, sell your towers and get at least 2 fully upgraded lightning towers. Auto freeze. Win.

As far as I can tell what you guys are calling luck is actually possible to control, but very difficult. As far as I can tell, the effectiveness of your weapons depends on when exactly you send the next wave. But even the slightest variation can make a huge difference in profits. Obviously I am not absolutely sure but after half an hour of poking at it that is what I have concluded.

i tested this with the money hack; It is literally impossible to beat on impossible without hacking. There is no way to get a fully upgraded flamethrower by level 10, and not even that can take that level down.

That said, what i find to be the best strategy is to put one mg just out of range of the firewall, and one more about 1 square out of range of that one. That way, you can get the maximum damage and thus maximum damage out on the first one through.

  83. I've gotten through easy, hard, and really hard 100% no damage. However Impossible is...impossible, without letting damage through. Best strategy I know of is placing MGs near the front, then selling/placing them again further down the path to survive the 2nd wave. That's it beyond level 2 I imagine you have to pick your battles letting some through but I have no idea how to survive beyond that, you pretty much lose before you can afford anything worthwhile :/
